Phoenicians in the Mediterranean date from the 12th - 10th century B.C., they were known for their trade, ships and seamen, fighting invaders and communicating with other cities around the Mediterranean Sea through naval trade routes.
One of the most important export products in the Phoenician era, was the purple dye, produced by breaking a sea shell known as Murex (Murex trunculus), this same pigment extract was so rare it became the mark of royalty.
